The Garden - Food for Thought

Every thing in the gardens is growing at a terrific pace and the seedlings we nurtured earlier in the year are now well established. Under the protection of the polytunnels, the indoor gardens have a head start; we have been enjoying a wide variety of lettuces and some tender broad beans. We planted some salad blue potatoes and are looking forward to tasting them. Courgettes, sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers and aubergines look promising but we will have to be patient until they are ready to harvest. Most of the bedding plants were sold on our Plant Sales Day, which means there is now space for the tomato plants to be moved to the right hand tunnel. There are always plenty of jobs to keep us occupied.
Outside in the vegetable garden, the plants are in their neat rows; cabbages, leeks and onions, with the runner beans beginning to climb their poles. Weeding is always a task to be tackled if anyone has a spare hour or more! There is something very satisfying about eating freshly grown food; the wonderful flavours to savour, and knowing that it is full of natural goodness, no artificial anything!
A new venture this year will be the production of homemade Herb Garden jellies, infused vinegars, oils and sauces, which will be available in the new Farm Shop. The herb garden is looking very pretty at this time of year, but we want to make some of its wonderful scents and tastes available for visitors to take home with them; mint, lemon balm, rosemary, golden marjoram, lemon verbena and scented geranium are some of the varieties on offer.
God has given us all things richly to enjoy, and we are very privileged here at Caring For Life to be able to share in his provision through the gardens. They supply fresh food for the meals in the refectory, for Tindall and Wendy Margaret homes, and soon through the new café facility and shop. Please pray for the staff and people we care for as they work together to tend and harvest from the gardens, that The Lord will be seen in all we do.
