Strange goings on at
Crag House Farm
(With apologies to our supporters in Scotland!)

One of our planned summer activities for those attending the therapeutic daytime activity projects at Crag House Farm was the CFL Highland Games in mid-August. The day dawned reasonably fine, but this meant that Jonathan and his team needed to bring in more straw, so the “Games” section of the afternoon did not go ahead as planned.

Nevertheless, quite a clan of Scottish individuals made an appearance on the day and prizes were given for those showing the most ingenuity! Nessie herself made an appearance, as did a fearsome Scottish clansman. Seeing the line up of characters sent a number of people into fits of giggles and the whole day was great fun.

Lunch was a Scottish menu, with lamb mince, clapshot, oatmeal pudding and stovies, followed by cranachan, (a lovely mixture of raspberries, whipped cream and toasted oatmeal).

After lunch we tried our hand, or rather, our feet, at some traditional Scottish dancing. We really were not very good at it, but we did try.

A tug of war followed, together with “welly wanging” and a few other games.

To keep everyone in a competitive mood, a treasure hunt was then organised and the two teams tore around the farm to collect up items first and try to beat their opponents. Treasures included a bulrush from the sensory pond, a hen feather, a pine cone, a gorse flower and much more! There was some impressive racing around by staff members, in order to try to ensure their team won!!

The actual Highland Games will have to put in an appearance at a later date, but this was certainly a very enjoyable, fun afternoon for some of those in our care.
