Drama Workshop

As the drama workshops have progressed, we have seen the young people grow in confidence in terms of improvisation and mime, poetry recital and drama sketches.

Our sessions always begin with correct breathing technique. The purpose is not only to increase lung power but also to increase oxygen flow for good health and circulation. We therefore have breathing exercises, physical exercises including facial muscle exercise, speech and voice exercises as warm up before any other activities.

Development of imagination is encouraged through improvisation and mime and it has been good to watch the young people enjoy inventing and developing their ideas e.g. a simple walk along a seashore – what is to be found, what happens as a result – developing situations and characters – sometimes the scene will be from a Christian perspective and so there is ample opportunity to include faith issues.

The classes are invaluable for encouraging self-awareness and awareness of others. Also for developing trust when interacting and performing.

There has been progress with the young people being able to learn the words of scripts and as their confidence grows, so we hope to become a little more ambitious in terms of performance. We look forward to the day when our adult learning centre is built and we are able to house staging and lighting with other technical facilities for invited audiences.
