Floating Support Project

Whilst our residential project is superb, it would be impossible to provide supported housing for everyone who is referred to us. There are also many we care for who do not need the level of supervision that is given in the supported homes.

Specifically set up to take referrals of people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, the team locate suitable accommodation, then provide ongoing support.

Support can consist of helping people to learn how to book doctor's appointments, and accompanying them until they are confident; helping fill out forms, budgeting skills and assisting people with shopping. As well as teaching practical day to day tasks, the team simply visit people, build friendships and show love to those whom the community as a whole may consider "unloveable". Spending time in this way is crucial to enabling a person to sustain their tenancy.

Those in the care of this project are encouraged to spend leisure time together in groups, which can consist of day trips to the beach, countryside or even a visit to the local bowling alley.

Referrals come in via many different sources: Social Services, Probation, Housing Department, churches, friends of individuals, self-referrals or other organisations in the housing sector. The need for assistance is obvious and our aim is to lay a foundation of friendship and trust which will enable people to maintain a tenancy, to emerge from the difficulties of the past, and face the future with new hope.

Many of those cared for have the added difficulty of a mental health problem, a learning disability or a physical disability. Others have serious psychological problems. All needs are dealt with individually, and each person treated with dignity, not as numbers on a list, or problems for a city.

The love of Jesus expressed through our staff on this project has turned lives around and helped many people come to terms with their situation, bringing dignity and self respect to those who have so often been abused in the past.
