Benefits & Tenancies

SUPPORT IN ALL AREAS

Many of those we support struggle to navigate the world and are unable to access the support they need because of learning disabilities, mental health needs or the impact of trauma in their lives.

Why We Help

COMPLEX SYSTEMS

One in five people in Leeds live in poverty, and some areas of the city fall within the 1% of the most deprived areas in the UK. It is within this context that we seek to support people.

Our Benefits & Tenancies Team provides practical and emotional support to individuals navigating the often complex benefits system. This may involve helping someone complete a benefits application, supporting them to attend assessments, or assisting in appealing decisions. We work with individuals who are unable to work because of physical and/or mental health conditions, as well as those seeking financial support to supplement a low income from employment.

For many people, the benefits system can feel overwhelming and emotionally exhausting, particularly for those who struggle with limited literacy, poor digital access, or difficulties managing appointments. That’s why our Benefits & Tenancies Team is so crucial.

Many benefit applications require people to answer deeply personal questions about their daily lives, including how they manage tasks such as washing, using the toilet or preparing meals.

Our team provides compassionate, sensitive support throughout this process, helping people complete forms accurately whilst also ensuring that the individuals concerned see their worth and value. It is an incredible blessing to be able to support people through this season.

Through this practical support, genuine care and the relationships built, opportunities naturally arise to share the hope of the gospel. Our ultimate aim is to point people to Christ and to make Him known.

We currently support around 50 individuals at any one time, although this number fluctuates depending on caseload and demand. Referrals come from a wide range of sources, including statutory agencies, voluntary organisations, social prescribers, churches, family members, and self-referrals.

Following benefits support, many individuals continue to access other areas of the support we offer, such as our Being There team or our daytime Therapeutic activities.

The team also supports the rollout of tenancies and the completion of legal documentation required for residents living in Caring For Life properties.

PROVERBS 31:8-9

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.  Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
