A team from Xiros came along to Caring For Life recently to lend a hand for the day, helping with both sorting harvest and harvesting! They worked really hard, on what turned out to be a beautiful, warm autumn day.

In the morning, the team helped to sort tinned food and other food items, getting the food stores tidied up and ready for the influx of harvest gifts which were due any day.

In the afternoon they tackled harvest of a different kind, picking apples here at Crag House Farm, the home of Caring For Life.

The apples are turned into pressed apple juice, and the fruit has to be picked at just the right time!

We are really thankful to the team for all their efforts, and their very practical support of Caring For Life’s work.

Some of us may be familiar with the sight of tractors working in the fields, cutting hay or silage, or making and loading up bales. But we may well be less familiar with what goes on behind the scenes.

Cutting the 2019 hay harvest.

In addition to the Agriculture Project caring for the land here at Caring For Life, and watching when the hay crop is ready, the Mechanics Project plays an important “behind the scenes" role.

The Mechanics Project looks after various vehicles, including the farm ones, helping to keep other projects running smoothly, whilst providing important experience and opportunities for those on the project.

An impressive list of machinery had to be checked over, serviced, cleaned or repaired, ready for the hay harvest this year. It’s not good if machinery breaks down when there is a race against time to get the harvest in before the weather breaks!

Behind the scenes, the Mechanics Project checked over the following equipment:  Round baler  Conventional baler Mower  Tedder Haybob Tractor

It’s all a vital part of bringing in the harvest. We are very thankful that the hay was safely gathered in during the fine spell a few weeks ago.

It’s that time of year again, when we at Caring For Life are busy getting ready for our annual Open Day.

The large food demo and vendor marquee is set up.

With that comes a great deal of hectic activity that we tend to call, “Open Day Madness”!

A great deal is involved in ensuring that the whole site is ready for a mini invasion by the general public, and much thought goes into planning what will take place where!

We are tremendously grateful to volunteers who help us in the run up to Open Day, as well as on the day itself, and we could not take on such a large event without their help.

New to our Open Day this year will be the Tailwaggers Dog Club, and also a Food Fayre, showcasing local food producers. Everybody needs to be catered for, with the site carefully planned and marked off.

Cutting grass and putting up tents and gazebos can be tricky in heavy rain or windy weather, so inclement weather conditions can really add to Open Day madness! But our prayer is that everyone who comes along will really enjoy the day, and that many people who previously knew little of our charity's work, will go away inspired and encouraged by the ministry of Caring For Life.
